Photography competition celebrates renewable energy in South Africa

The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) in collaboration with the Renewable Energy Centre of Research and Development (RECORD) and the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) have launched a photography competition. This year’s theme, “REnergy for a green future”, calls on amateur and professional photographers to submit work which celebrates South Africa’s transition into a green economy. The theme is open to interpretation and not necessarily limited to pictures of renewable energy installations. Winners will receive a R1,000 cash prize and their photographs will feature in a 2015 Calendar which will be distributed to stakeholders and role-players within the energy sector.

Marlett Balmer, RECORD’s Senior Energy Advisor explained that the photography competition aims to involve more non-technical people in the very technical field of energy development. The competition invites the general population to think about renewable energy and to celebrate the progress that South Africa has made towards an environmentally friendly future by relinquishing its dependency of fossil fuels. “We also hope that by stimulating people to think about their energy future they would realise the value of a sustainable and green future offered by renewable energy”, she said.

Balmer believes that photography could play a role in raising awareness and promoting clean energy, “Photography offers the ability to communicate an abstract topic in an artistic and entertaining way and it will hopefully emphasise the beauty of renewable energy.  It also offers the opportunity to interpret the subject in a more creative way, in turn hopefully inspiring people to embrace renewable energy”.

The judges will take the interpretation of the theme into account, looking specifically at relevance and innovation. In addition the submission must be suitable for reproduction and be of a high quality. Factors of composition, technical execution and artistic merit will also be taken in to consideration. A panel of judges will select 12 winners, one for every month.

To enter the competition, email your photographs with a short paragraph (250 words) describing your interpretation and how your picture relates to the theme to AND by the 12th of September 2014. For more information and to read the terms of entry please consult the RECORD website.
